윤석열 전 대통령이 18일 자신을 지지해온 청년들에게 옥중 성탄 메시지를 발표했다.

지난 9월 2일 12.3 비상계엄으로 인해 수사·재판을 받고 있는 군인들에 대한 공소 취소를 요청하는 옥중 메시지, 추석 메시지를 잇는 네 번째 옥중 메시지다.

尹 전 대통령은 “자유와 정의, 주권을 지키기 위해 깨어 일어난 청년 여러분의 '이웃사랑'과 '나라사랑' 실천에 든든하고 감사하다”며 “자녀에게 올바른 나라를 물려줘야 한다는 절박함이 제가 모든 것을 내어놓고 비상사태를 선포한 이유 중 하나”라며 기존 입장을 고수했다.

윤 전 대통령 측 배의철 변호사는 이날 자신의 SNS에 올린 ‘12·18 청년 여러분께 드리는 성탄 메시지’를 통해  "오늘은 윤 전 대통령의 65번째 생신"이라며 "청년들을 위해 옥중에서 기도하는 가운데 성탄 메시지를 전해 달라 말씀하셨다"고 전했다.

이 메시지에서 윤 전 대통령은 “다른 사람의 자유가 짓밟힐 때 함께 싸우는 것이 이웃사랑이요, 수많은 이웃들이 모여 한 나라를 이루니, '이웃사랑은 곧 나라사랑(愛國)'인 것”이라며 “그러므로 예수님의 가르침은 애국의 실천이요, 자유를 억압하는 폭정을 멈추게 하는 힘”이라고 말했다.

이어 “저희 부부에게는 자녀가 없다. 그래서 여러분이 제게는 자녀처럼 느껴진다”며 “저는 옥중의 고난 속에 있지만 대한민국은 청년들이 보여준 희망을 얻었다”고 강조했다.

그러면서 “현재의 고난은 장차 우리에게 나타날 영광과 비교할 수 없으니(로마서 8:18), 지금은 시련과 고난 속에 있을지라도 여러분의 내일은 더욱 찬란하게 빛날 것”이라며 “그러므로 청년 여러분, 힘내십시오. 여러분은 어두운 시대를 밝히는 등불”이라고 덧붙였다.

윤 전 대통령은 또 “성탄의 은총이 청년 여러분의 걸음마다 머물고 무엇보다 건강하며, 여러분의 아름다운 꿈이 이뤄지기를 하나님께 간절히 기도한다”며 “부정과 불의에 침묵하지 않는 청년 여러분은 이 시대 예수의 제자들”이라고 마무리했다.

Yoon’s lawyer, Bae Ui-cheol, wrote on social media that day, sharing the “Dec. 18 Christmas Message to Young People,” noting that “today is former President Yoon’s 65th birthday,” and adding, “While praying in prison for young people, he asked that this Christmas message be delivered.”

In the message, Yoon said, “To stand together and fight when another person’s freedom is trampled is love of neighbor. As countless neighbors come together to form a nation, love of neighbor is love of country.” He continued, “Therefore, Jesus’ teachings are the practice of patriotism and the power that stops tyranny that suppresses freedom.”

He went on to say, “My wife and I have no children. That is why you feel like my children to me,” adding, “Though I am enduring hardship in prison, the Republic of Korea has gained hope from what the young people have shown.”

Quoting the Bible, he said, “‘The sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us’ (Romans 8:18). Even if you are now in times of trial and hardship, your tomorrow will shine even more brilliantly.” He added, “So, young people, take heart. You are the lamps that illuminate a dark age.”

Yoon concluded, “I sincerely pray that the grace of Christmas will remain with you at every step, that you remain healthy above all else, and that your beautiful dreams come true. Young people who do not remain silent in the face of corruption and injustice are the disciples of Jesus in this age.”

Today is the president’s 65th birthday. Even so, while praying in prison for young people, he asked that this Christmas message be delivered.

Jesus said, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” This is not merely a moral teaching. To stand together and fight when another person’s freedom is trampled is love of neighbor. As countless neighbors come together to form one nation, love of neighbor is love of country (patriotism). Therefore, Jesus’ teachings are the practice of patriotism and the power that halts tyranny that suppresses freedom.

That is why I am encouraged and grateful for the young people who awakened to protect freedom, justice, and sovereignty, and who practice love of neighbor and love of country. Because of you, the future of the Republic of Korea is bright and hopeful.

My wife and I have no children. That is why you feel like my children to me. What parent would ever wish harm upon their child? The desperate belief that we must pass on a proper nation to our children was one of the reasons I gave everything and declared a state of emergency. As a result, I am now enduring hardship in prison, but the Republic of Korea has gained hope from what the young people have shown.
