1년 전 어떤 이들은 잠에서 깨어나보니 바뀐 세상에 어리둥절했을 것이다. 그날 밤 우리 국민 절반은 평소처럼 잠들었을 테고, 혹은 TV를 틀어놓고 있지 않았다면 가상 현실처럼 보이는 생중계 장면을 모르고 지나갔을 수 있다. 대략 밤 11시 이후의 상황이었으니까.

나도 평소 생활습관으로는 다음날 아침에 일어나 '잠든 사이에 뭐가 지나갔지'하며 깜짝 놀라는 쪽에 분류됐을 것이다.

하지만 그날은 내가 즐겨봤던 채널A 예능프로 ''강철부대', 누가 최종 승자가 될지 판가름 나는 방영날이었다. 이 프로는 밤늦게 편성돼 있어 통상 나는 넷플릭스에 올라오면 봐왔는데, 그날 밤은 어쩌다가 프로 방영시간에 보고 있었다. 

어느 순간 TV 화면 하단에 '비상계엄 선포' 라는 자막이 떴다. 처음엔 그 자막도 예능의 한 부분인 줄 알았다. 그 뒤로 거의 빛의 속도로 신문 제작에 들어간 것에 대한 설명은 필요없을 것이다.

잠깐 눈을 붙이고 다음 날 새벽 나는 혼란한 상황에서 <윤 대통령은 '무언가에 홀린 사람이 아닐까'라는 합리적 의문>이라는 제목의 글을 썼다. 아직 오리무중 속에서 직감으로 써내려간 글이었다. 그때까지만 해도 어떻게 될 지 모르는 상황이었으니 신변에 대한 위기감도 없지 않았다.

계엄 날 새벽에 썼던 이 글의 예측은 대부분 현실이 됐다. 윤 대통령은 탄핵 당해 감옥에 갇혔고, 윤은 보수의 뿌리를 뽑아 놓아 보수정당에게 다시 기회가 올지는 미심쩍다. 지금 국힘당의 행태만을 봐도 '보수의 운(運)'은 정말 다한 것 같다. 

당시 이 글이 게재된 뒤 반응을 보면서, '윤석열의 망상에 비롯된 황당 계엄'을 지지하는 이들이 내 주위에 꽤 있다는 사실에 좀 낯선 느낌을 받았다. 그것도 많이 배웠거나 민주화운동, 자유민주주의를 입에 올리던 사람들 중에서 그런 반응을 보였다. 이들은 시대착오적인 계엄의 대의와 필요성을 강변했다.

언론인으로 여러 정권을 지켜봤던 내 상식으로는 요령부득이었다. 그런 논리로 계엄을 용납하면 '독재정권' '전체주의 정권' 무엇인들 용납 못 할 게 없다. 윤석열의 계엄에 찬성한다면 지금 독재의 기미가 보이는 이재명 대통령의 독주를 막을 명분과 논리도 없어진다. 윤 계엄을 용납하지 않았기에 이재명의 섣부른 독재 시도도 결코 용납이 안 되는 것이다.

윤 대통령이 누구와 비상계엄을 상의했는지 모르나 이런 판단 능력 자체가 그가 바보천치나 다름없다는 걸 증명하는 셈이다. 나라의 운명을 지금까지 이런 바보같은 인간에게 맡겨왔다는 걸 새삼 깨닫는 순간이다.

하나의 예로, 이날 밤 발표된 계엄사령관 포고령 1호에 따르면 의하면 계엄사의 언론과 출판 통제가 나온다. 이는 납활자와 인쇄로 찍어내는 종이신문과 라디오, 공중파 TV만 있던 1979년 시절의 언론 환경으로 본 것이다. SNS, 유튜브, 인터넷 등으로 무한 확대된 바뀐 세상에서 계엄사가 막강한 권력을 쥐고 있다 해도 어떻게 언론 통제가 되겠나. 윤 대통령과 국방부장관의 머리는 어느 한 시점에서 멈춰져 있는 게 아닌가.

이날 밤 자지 않고 국회 상황 생중계를 봤던 국민들의 마음에는 '윤석열은 더 이상 대통령이 아니다'라는 확신으로 피가 끓었을 것이다.

윤 대통령은 계엄 선포를 할때 "파렴치한 종북 반국가세력을 일거에 척결하고 자유 헌정질서를 지키기 위해..."라고 말했지만, 바로 윤 대통령이 '자유 헌정질서 파괴자'라고 여겼을 것이다. 야당에서는 윤 대통령에 대해 '내란범' 적용을 할 태세다. 국회 앞에서 나왔던 시민들이 "윤석열을 체포하라"는 구호는 현실화될 가능성이 높다.

After the column was published, I was struck by how many people around me — people well-educated, people who spoke of democratization or liberal democracy — defended Yoon’s absurd, delusional attempt at martial law. They argued for the lofty cause and necessity of this archaic measure.

As someone who had observed many administrations as a journalist, I found such logic incomprehensible.
If that reasoning justifies martial law, then what authoritarian or totalitarian regime wouldnotbe permissible?
If one supports Yoon’s martial law, then one loses the moral basis to oppose President Lee Jae-myung’s now-emerging signs of despotism. The only reason Lee’s premature authoritarian impulses cannot be tolerated is because Yoon’s martial law could not be tolerated.
