이재명 대통령이 통일교와 신천지를 겨냥해 "해산할 수 있다"고 직격했다.

통일교와 신천지는 국민의힘 전당대회를 앞두고 특정 후보를 당선시키기 위해 신도들을 당원으로 집단가입시킨 의혹을 받고 있는 종교단체다.

이 대통령은 2일 국무회의에서 "종교 재단의 조직적 정치 개입은 정교 분리 원칙이 명시된 헌법 위반"이라며 “일본처럼 종교 재단 해산 명령까지 가능하도록 제도적 수단을 검토하라”고 지시했다. 

이 대통령이 인용한 일본 종교 재단 해산 명령은 작년 7월 일본 법원에 의해 해산 명령을 받았던 통일교를 말한다. 

이는 지난 2022년 아베 신조 전 일본 총리 암살 사건 수사를 계기로 일본 정부가 제기한 통일교 해산 청구 소송에 따른 판결이다. 

당시 아베 전 총리를 살해한 범인은 범행 동기로 자신의 가족이 경제적 어려움에 빠지게 한 통일교를 아베 전 총리가 지지했기 때문이라고 진술한 것으로 알려졌다.

이 대통령은 “정교 분리 원칙을 위반하는 행위는 헌법과 헌정 질서를 훼손하는 중대한 사안”이라며 "정교 분리 원칙이 실제로 작동하지 않고 위반 행위가 방치될 경우 헌정 질서가 흔들리는 것은 물론 종교 전쟁에 가까운 수준의 사회 갈등으로 비화될 수 있다”고 말했다. 

그러면서  "단순 검토를 넘어 향후 어떤 법과 제도 정비가 필요한지 실행 계획과 프로그램을 마련해 국무회의에 별도로 보고하라"고 지시했다.

이에 조원철 법제처장은 “법제처에서 한번 검토하도록 하겠다”며 “아직 검토된 바는 없는 것으로 안다”고 답했다.

President Lee emphasized, “Violations of the separation of church and state are a grave matter that undermines the Constitution and the constitutional order,” adding:
“If the separation principle is not effectively enforced and violations are left unchecked, the constitutional order could be shaken, and conflicts could escalate to the level of a religious war.”

He further ordered officials to move beyond a preliminary review, directing them to “prepare an actionable plan and program for the necessary legal and institutional reforms, and report them separately to the Cabinet.”

In response, Korea’s Legislative Office chief Cho Won-cheol stated, “We will review the matter,” adding that no formal review has been conducted so far.
