영국의 소설가이자 사회 비평가였던 찰스 디킨슨이 쓴 1830년대에 쓴 세계적인 작품, 올리버 트위스트(Oliver Twist).

어린 시절 내게는 충격이었던 이 소설의 주인공은 소매치기거나 도둑, 장물아비, 심지어 매춘부다.

어느 사회에서나 가장 밑바닥 삶을 사는 청소년들의 이야기를 통해 순수하고 선한 모습을 그리고자 했던 디킨슨의 의도는 적중했고, 그 반응은 가히 폭발적이었다. 미국으로까지 건너가 저자가 직접 이 소설을 읽어주는 일종의 공연까지 할 정도였다. 이 책 출간되고 곧바로 디킨슨은 19세기 최고의 인기작가이자 부자 작가가 되었다. 그가 사망한 후에도 수 많은 영화와 뮤지컬, TV용 연속극이 만들어졌고, 미국에 저작권법이 제정되는 계기가 되기도 했다.

부랑아들을 먹이고, 입히고, 잘 가르치겠다며 영국 정부가 설립한 강제수용소에서 벌어지는 이 소설 "올리버 트위스트"는 영국에서 어린이를 주인공으로 하는 최초의 작품이기도 하다.

나는 이 "올리버 트위스트"를 떠올릴 때마다 "선감학원" 생각이 난다. 선감학원도 부랑아들을 집단수용했던 곳이다. 

선감학원은 일제 강점기인 1942년에 '어린이 근로정신대'의 일환으로 세워져 1982년까지 운영됐던 부랑아 강제수용소였다. 일제가 물러간 뒤에는 경기도가 운영했는데, 일제와 별반 다르지 않은 폭압적이고도 인권유린적인 집단수용시설이었다.

2019년 2월, 당시 경기도지사였던 이재명 대통령이 '선감학원 생존자들의 억울함을 풀 수 있도록 노력하겠다'면서도 공식사과는 거부했다. "진상조사결과 정확한 실태가 밝혀지면 공식적으로 사과하겠다"라고 밝힌 것이다.

Seongam Academy was established in 1942 during the Japanese occupation of Korea, originally as part of the "Youth Labor Corps." He has invited his former factory coworkers to his son’s wedding in a touching show of personal loyalty. Should he not now, as the nation’s leader, extend even greater recognition to Seongam’s survivors by offering a formal state apology?

On June 4, the Seoul High Court ordered the state and Gyeonggi Province to pay compensation ranging from 45 million to 650 million won (approx. $32,000 to $470,000) to each of 13 Seongam Academy victims. But no amount of money can substitute for the healing power of an apology long overdue.
