Who Were President Lee Jae-myung’s “Geonjin Monk” and “Kwon Seong-dong”?

The basic rule of political lobbying is to hedge one’s bets. You don’t put everything on one side. You take out insurance so you can survive no matter where power ends up. The 2022 presidential election was no exception.

In order to approach People Power Party candidate Yoon Suk-yeol, the Unification Church broke through the Geonjin monk–Kim Keon-hee line and also established a separate connection with Kwon Seong-dong. Managing two separate lines suggests that the Unification Church had considerable insight into the internal dynamics of Yoon Suk-yeol’s camp.

Then how did it approach Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung? It is highly likely that there was a channel on the Democratic side equivalent to the Geonjin monk or Kwon Seong-dong.

It has been revealed that the meeting between Lee Jae-myung and Jim Rogers just before the 2022 election was orchestrated by the Unification Church. Who was in close contact with the Church and arranged that meeting? That is the first question that must be answered.

The line formed at that time would likely have continued to function as a connection to the Unification Church through the post-election period, Lee’s time as opposition leader, and all the way to President Lee Jae-myung in 2025.

The selective investigations exposed during Special Prosecutor Min Joong-ki’s probe, along with suspicions of discreet communication between the special prosecutor and the presidential office, raise doubts that this connection line is still alive.

Yet the situation is unfolding strangely. Former minister Jeon Jae-soo, a figure associated with the pro–Moon Jae-in camp, is being highlighted as if he represents the entirety of the Democratic Party’s ties to the Unification Church. Once a single individual is placed out front to generate smoke, the actual path of power that needs to be uncovered slips out of sight.

The Unification Church gate must not end with the question of “how much a pro–Moon figure received in 2018–2019.” What must be revealed is through which line, with what promises, and with what calculations the Unification Church approached candidate Lee Jae-myung in 2022—and President Lee Jae-myung today.

This, however, is an investigation the police simply cannot handle. They cannot do it. The answer is a special prosecutor recommended from outside the two major parties.
